Safety, cost and court: your questions
Sorted into safety, cost and the court process. If yours is not here, call any office.
Safety
Is it safe to visit this site?
If someone checks your phone or computer, use a private window. The Leave this site button at the top of each page opens a weather site in one click.
Can you avoid calling my home number?
Yes. Tell us the one way to reach you that is safe, whether a work phone, a friend’s number or email, and we will use only that.
Do you take cases where the other parent has a lawyer?
Yes, often. Many of our cases have a lawyer on each side.
Cost
How much will my case cost?
It depends on how much the two of you agree on. After the first meeting we give you a range and the fee arrangement in writing.
Do you charge for the first meeting?
We tell you the fee for a first meeting when you book it, before you come in.
The process
Do I have to go to court?
Not always. Many cases settle with an agreement the judge signs. Protective orders almost always have a short hearing.
What should I bring to the first meeting?
Any court papers you have received, a list of your questions, and, for a divorce or support case, recent pay stubs.
Can you help if my case is in another county?
We work in the courts around Kansas City. If your case is farther away, we will say so and help you find someone local.
Ask us the one that isn’t here
Ask it on the phone. A lawyer will answer, not a call center.
